Have a worn groove on the aluminum shaft of my 1939 Evinrude Elto Cub.  It is where the transom mount attaches to the aluminum drive shaft tube.  Should i repair the worn groove on the aluminum drive shaft tube by TIG welding or JB Weld?  Have a local shop that is very good with welding(they weld repairs on classic cars).

After the repair i will need to sand or file smooth with the shaft.

      Any recos?

I guess I’d wonder first of all “what’s” rubbing to cause the deep groove?
At this point the issue is only cosmetic, but it could be welded up,
filed down close, then use various grits of 1″ aluminum oxide sanding
        roll paper.

        Prepare to be boarded!

Either one would be OK for me, but if you intend to run the motor you should really improve the contact points at the drive shaft tube. I use some aluminum tubing from the home improvement center, some rubber from an old inner tube, a hack saw, and some files to make these shims for the top mount. For the bottom I just use some inner tune. Might have been 2 pieces glued together. You’ll know if you try it. Ran almost 2 gallons of gas through this motor last summer and never uploaded a video. A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
