So I bought this motor a few months ago and have been working on several issues to see if it will start. Compression check is approximately 70 psi both cylinders. I have rebuilt the carb and put new impeller in the lower unit. So I did have spark both cylinders but never could get it to start. So I removed magneto plate and tried to put a new set of BRP points on and re-assembled plate to the motor. Could never get points to open when cam top indicator hits the point cam foot. So I removed everything with the magneto plate still attached and re-installed points with no luck. So put the old points back and now I can set the gap to .020”. However, I still cannot get to start so I am thinking the spark may be too weak. I can only check with one of those clear Harbor Freight spark checkers. So is there some trick to get the new points to open? I tried adjusting the hold down plate and screw cam and no luck. Thx
September 20, 2026 at 8:08 am #328779did you physically compare the two sets because some (New) points have been known to be flaky. if they are the same identical size ( rub arm lenght wise ) no reason not to open.
post some pics side by side.
TOP on the cam means top side not TDC ! Points rub arm needs to be set on the highest point of the cam thenadjusted to .020 with the adjustment elleptical screw.
if you have good sparks with the old points work with those…see if the engine will kick over with a spoonfull of fuel inserted in the plug holes…. or easier…. a blast of fuel mix in the carb face…… report back results

There are other issues besides the ignition that can keep a motor from starting. If your getting a spark with your tester you may need to look elsewhere.
A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Yes indeed. You have reinstalled the original points and have spark? Perhaps you reversed the plug wires. Try priming the cylinders with a little fresh fuel/oil mix to see if it will fire briefly…
September 21, 2026 at 10:02 am #328865Compare the steel base plates of the point set, I seem to recall some discussion about the hole that the eccentric adjusting screw fits into not being in the correct position so as to allow the breaker arm to move close in to the cam , thus allowing the points to open. If that is the issue, just use a small round file to adjust the hole.
