My Son just got a 4 hp folding motor from his Grandpa.  He is doing maintenance on it and came across this spring lever.  Don’t have a manual yet, just the case and motor.  Can anyone tell us what the lever is for?  See pics

      Thanks in advance!

some kind of handle or locking lever    likely a handle see part 27   but more likely a lock release lever  for the folding lu

Hey Jacques, that is what we thought at first.  However it does not connect to anything outside of it’s isolated housing.  Thinking a vent but don’t know for sure.

looks more like a handle with that gold recess to slip fingers under.  does the thing pull out a bit to  facilitate transport  ??

have your son download this free  10th edition    johnson  service bible, J&Es  are cousins anyway   and he will find all the info he needs to service   the carb, timing  gear case etc…..

that kicker likely needs new ignition coils, condensers a small touch up on points and adjustment (see manual)  .. may as well get some  metallic strand  plug wires   7mm if he is going to replace the coils.     (DO NOT USE CARBON plug wires used on cars)   lots of utubes on this needed tune up .    Copper strand wire  is best but any metallic strand wire  will do … 0 ohms is 0 ohms on 18 inches of  wire !

bike shops, lawnmower shops can sell you a few feet !

these   wonder full 4hp twins are the best trollers  for a small boat or as a back up to a bigger engine. it runs on 50/1 fuel oil but 40/1 won’t hurt it

fld the lower unit up and the lever goes over it and holds the lower folded in the up positio.

Yes, this lever and pocket holds the gearcase in the folded position so it doesn’t just flop back down.  It is critical that the tip of the gearcase is not snapped off though,  or the latch won’t be able to help.

Thanks Guys!!!!  It is a latch for storage as everyone here stated.  Almost too obvious.  Kid checked impeller, changed lower unit oil, checked compression, lubricated the cylinders, but forgot to pay attention how he unlatched it 😆.

                    Regards

IF granpa never had the coils serviced……up to you but pulling the flywheel should be next important step in case coils are cracked orn condensers heat up and short out . getting stranded from the dock is no fun  when the coils pack it in
