I just got a NOS breaker point and so far the barrel test in the driveway looks like it is promising. I can’t get to the lake until Saturday morning though. I really don’t know why this set of points would have worked.

Well, at this point, don’t argue with success!  Hope it works out on the water….

The lake test was a bust. Initially it ran great, then the misfire started then went away, then started again. Really inconsistent. I am almost out of time for the year in Michigan…

Frustrating for sure !  I wish that I could help, where are you in MI? are an AOMCI member ? We have been blessed with remarkable weather here in MI , but it won’t last much longer I fear. Your issue sure sounds like the problem that I referenced in my previous post about the 9.5 hp.

I’m in Oakland county but keep the boat in the water in northern michigsn in the summer. I think at this point i am going to swap powerheads from a 58 evinrude 35 and see how that goes

Well, I wouldn’t go that far.   But, you need to abolutely make sure that it is an ignition issue that is causing the cylinder to misfire/drop out.  Are you sure there is no internal water leak causing this problem?   It is time to start over again with the ignition, I fear we have missed something…

That being said, you could simply swap the mag plate assemblies with the 58 engine, perhaps that might point something out…..
