I have been working on restoring this beautiful old Evinrude outboard and everything is in really good condition and the restoration is going well I just started into the ignition system and have a few questions I’m replacing the plug wires with 7mm solid core wires since the old cloth has deteriorated but I measured the coils and am getting and open circuit is there an aftermarket magneto coil and condenser people are using? If not is it possible to rewind the coils and does anyone have the specs on that? Thank you

August 13, 2026 at 5:41 pm #326277I wonder if Evinrude Zypher coils would work?
Another option may be to use the Military Scintilla style coils,
but, if possible, lots of monkey business involved to get them
to fit on the laminates.Prepare to be boarded!

I can look around the garage tomorrow to see if I have a loose
Zephyr magplate to take some measurements, but perhpas
someone has the information recorded. What are the dimensions, bolt center to center on your coils?

Zephyr coils are the same as the coils in your motor. Before you pay for a replacement, have the seller check to be sure it isn’t open like yours. Pretty common with this coil. Also be sure the wire connection is tight and doesn’t move if you try to twist it. Use caution when removing and connecting the plug wires and installing the coil.
A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

August 14, 2026 at 12:11 pm #326324Before you go too far, confirm that you measured the resistance at the coil, across the two wire connections. If you measured from one lead to ground, you would expect to see an open circuit.
