I’m getting cheaper with age as well….Someone killed this engine’s possible value just by painting it black, worth much more in its original paint. Don’t get me wrong, if this engine was in nice cosmetic and mechanical shape, I would be willing to pay this price and perhaps more. I love the 55 Johnson color and graphics. I would call the seller to see if his price is negotiable, if so, I would go look at it. I agree, that engine looks more like a $100 old used outboard to me. On the plus side, the engine likes to be whole, and hasn’t been badly molested.
Negotiations will be tricky, the seller is likely to be offended if you just spring the $100 offer in him. Give him some time to see if his ebay offer pans out, then gently explain all the various service operations that will be needed to make this a reliable daily runner…Finding a decent fuel tank will cost money as well…
PS-Don’t forget to point out the engine has been badly overheated at some point, and there may be hidden piston/cylinder damage/wear.
