Two thoughts if the cable is too taught it will jump in and out of gear tipically when the prop is slipping it is far smoother . Todays lower unit lubricants are far more slippery and could cause a lack of grab of the spring on the drum there is still 90 wt. non synthetic lower unit lube available which has less lubricity
