My humble opinion … the gear sets in our antique and classic outboards are not sophisticated enough to have been manufactured in lapped -in matched pairs. So, with some reasonable consideration to replacing individual gears that don’t have excessive wear or broken teeth, should be no problem. Now this is likely not the case for modern large horsepower outboards.
