Been on line troubleshooting my problem. I have found references to three different sizes for the flywheel. 12 3/4, 12 5/8, and 12 7/8. Now I need to find out what size I have by doing a search on engine SN. That being said, I could not find any other Mercruiser part number for the in line 6 cylinder engines.
Some how I am thinking that I have a starter designed to engage a 12 5/8 flywheel, but my engine may have a 12 3/4 inch flywheel. While the starter may engage, it would make a hell of a racket being that it is more or less jammed into the flywheel teeth.

This make any sense to anyone??
