Hmmmm, That thought occurred to me. Perhaps when I replace the engine cover, the noise won’t be as pronounced. The gears are obviously engaging as it does start the engine just fine. Biggest concern is damaging the starter. Guess I better pull it one more time to check the tooth count and try the shims at the same time. This engine is installed in a vintage Wellcraft and the access is very limited. thks again.
