I saw those water tube guides but didn’t know what to do with them. They are supposed to slide down into the metal piece that retains the grommets? That makes perfect sense–I should have asked for tips before doing the job. This is NOT mentioned in my OMC manual, which covers up to 1972.
I should probably drop the gearcase back down and check the water tubes, now that I know how. Live and learn.
If I was starting this project over I’d likely give this engine away and pick up a three cylinder looper a couple of years younger.
