Everybody is quick to blame the boot #87, but that usually is not the real cause. The biggie is the #78 bellows around the shift rod. The third possibility is the seal on top of the water pump—don’t leave it out. Any of these three routes are famous for letting the hood fill up with exhaust smoke.
