There are some real challenges here besides
just welding cast iron. The welds are going
to have to withstand the outward pressures
of the crankshaft that caused the cracks in
the first place plus the cracks have been
contaminated with oil. Still you have nothing
to loose and if successful your son would
deserve a couple of -At-A Boys- and at least
one -You Done Good.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
