I have always used a steering wheel puller. Has the fine threads, grease the bolt, three 1/4×20 4" bolts with large washers, has the swivel point on the big bolt, and there you go. I even have always used grade 5 bolts and have never broken one.
But of course I was never a professional mechanic, so I guess I didn’t know any better 🙂
