The 1939 Mate/Cub DID come with a J-4 Champion. That number was changed to J-12 which became J-12J then J-12C. They had problems with people stripping out the threads in the cylinder head, so 1940 & 1941 models had longer threads and used a Champion H-10J. . . 😀
