I figured it out. It was the roller arm shaft thingy that was bent just enough to cause the issues related above.
I swapped it out and tried another one and it works correctly with the original link.
Here are pics of the two. Hard to see the difference but the blue painted one has the right bend and the non painted one has the better roller which will get swapped.
