Hey Mark,
You say the recoil and tank look awful now. This sounds like an early 50s Fleetwin with the built-in tank Nad the neutral clutch. Am I correct? If so, I have a ’53 that is doing the exact same thing. I went through the ignition and got that thing throwing a nearly 1/2" blue spark. I cleaned the carb on the motor since it didn’t seem too bad. I started it up and got it idling fair. When I give it throttle it won’t do anything past about halfway amd it smokes like crazy. My next move is to remove the carb and try soaking it, then blasting it out with aerosol carb cleaner and compressed air. I’ll cut new gaskets where they are needed and try it again. This has a Tillotson carb on it and im.much more famiar with the later 50s OMC carbs. I have worked on a couple of the Tillotsons now though. They seem to be a bit more critical of adjustments than whet I’m used to, but once you get used it, not too bad. I’ll be following you thread to see what other pointers you get though. I have to believe mine is a carb issue. The symptoms sound just about like yours.
As far as ruining the paint, I’m sorry to hear that. Like everyone else has said though, we all have a list of stupid things we have done we wish we could undo that is much longer than we care to admit.
