First you have to determine whether it is broken or just expanded. Clean out the hole real good and get it out in the bright sunlight and peer in there at the spring to see if it is broken. If not broken, just mash it back together with a large vise, press or yes a hammer.
That spring winds up and slips when you hit an underwater obstruction. Do it often enough and it "grows" in length.
