I think it’s because the metal is very soft and there isn’t any good way to sit them down. They would tend to get toted around and taken on and off the boat more than the larger motors and they got thrown into a pile of camping gear once or twice a year for a couple of decades. They sure do get dented up and get to looking rough unless someone took exceptional care of it over the years. That’s my theory anyway. I could be totally off. Pugetsoundboater may be onto something there too…
