I have a Johnson 3 with kind of the same issue. It’s a ’67, so it, too, only has a low speed needle. Runs poorly to not at all at lower speeds. (Mine is also hard to start….is yours?) Carb is perfect, ignition is perfect, everything seems perfect……except maybe the compression. I don’t really have a bench mark to go by on compression; but I suspect this may be my problem, since it had a previous history of overheating. I have yet to get back to it. Maybe somebody can post some good compression numbers, so we BOTH have something to go by…..
