Great info Frank….Perhaps he went a little heavy on the gasket cement and plugged up that spray hole.
Just looked at your latest photos, powerhead sure does NOT look like it has been overheated, I think Frank has found the problem area.
As for the strange running characteristic you report, it probably has nothing to do with the hot exhaust leg.
Please be sure to pull that gearcase while the powerhead is off and inspect the water pump…Replace the impeller if you haven’t already done so.
