Well, the latest complete replacement water pump kits have plastic housings, with a SS liner. The diameter of the impeller is much smaller than the original impeller, but the replacement impeller is a bit taller than the original..Not familiar with the sierra part numbers, but pretty sure you will find the OEM part numbers of the newer pieces if you look up 1979 OMC 6hps.
Sometimes those 6hp driveshafts won’t pull out, the pinion key gets snags on the lower bushing….I wouldn’t force it….
