Should have re-read your initial post before responding. A failing crankshaft seal can result in erratic crankcase pressure / vacuum of a cylinder resulting in fuel starvation causing a miss. Nothing to do with the ignition.
A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
