    Be sure to clean off those splines as well as you can by spraying the driveshaft splines with light oil and running the driveshaft up and down many times into the crankshaft.  I doubt the stiff oring was holding the driveshaft into the crank, you were lucky to get it out of there without removing the powerhead.  Be sure to replace the oring and carefully apply OMC moly lube the the driveshaft splines prior to reinstalling the gearcase.
