Fathers Day Surprise: I ordered a replacement mag plate, brass support ring and retainer ring. They came in late Friday and I set to work on transferring everything over to the replacement magneto plate. Swapped out the brass ring and retainer and set points etc. Installed the flywheel and everything works as it should. Saturday I tried to start it and it choked and puked but I ran out of daylight. Long story short – it fired up today and ran for about 10 minutes. I still need to dial in the carburetor to find the sweet spots on the high and low but no more problems with the mag getting in a bind. My dad’s 92 BDay is in about a week but I was able to facetime him today and let him see it running which made both of us very happy.
My suggestion to anyone encountering an issue like this is to replace those 3 components rather than trying to wrestle with figuring it out. I think Bob Wright had a similar issue and ended up doing the same thing.
I want to tell everyone Thank You for your input on helping me diagnose the issue – I appreciate it very much!
Now to figure out the carb adjustments and make sure I have the proper fuel mixture ratio. I think I have it a 24:1 right now.
