Thank you everyone.  I unscrewed the rod caps and turned the pistons 90 degrees to inspect the ring gaps.  They look correctly aligned over the little alignment pins and have the correct gap, about .015″ which is the max for that motor (from looking in the back of the seloc manual). I think my rod caps are causing unnecessary friction when tightened.  I’m double checking alignment and going to do more testing with dial indicators (can suspend it over the lathe bed with centers in each end).  Thanks again for advice.  It is so much easier to fix something when the problem is obvious.
