Thanks all for your help and suggestions.  Needed to wrap up this phase of the project today so did exactly what JACQUES suggested above.  Twisted a small diameter copper wire tightly into the clip groove.  Since there’s virtually no lateral tension or pressure on this pin, this alternative “fix” should last for years.  Tank is now reassembled and soon as I get the fuel/air connector rebuilt with new springs & o-rings, it should be good to go.  Then on to getting the little Evinrude 7518 running again.
