The driveshaft should mesh nicely in the gearbox.  Your motor is direct drive, (forward only – no gearshift) so the driveshaft and propeller shaft should always turn together.  You could try disassembling the lower unit to see if the gear that the driveshaft fits into fell out of place.  First though, try looking down the hole the driveshaft goes in with a flashlight to see if everything looks lined up to accept the driveshaft.
