Why don’t you check if there’s oil or grease in the lower unit right now?  If you find oil, you know the gearbox can hold oil and you can just keep using that.  If you find grease then it could have originally taken either oil or grease as someone could have replaced the original oil with grease, or it could have been using grease from the factory, assuming there’s no gearshift.
