I suspect that the gas squirting out of “carb float pin/indicator thing”, was a result of the motor over heating, building pressure in the gas tank, and you didn’t have the vent open, or the vent is clogged.
A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
