I have done some repair now. I removed the previous installed upper seal using the puller tool. Then I made a 2 mm thick spacer that fits exactly inside the cantilever in the upper bearing and also fits onto the crankshaft down to the bottom of the cantilever . The purpose is to make space upwards to achieve a slight re-positioning upwards on the crankshaft for a new seal to ride onto a non-pitted area 2 mm higher up on the shaft. (Hope you understand my English). Finally, I installed a new seal onto the spacer I made, and applied sealant to the outer edge of the seal. I also loosened the return pipe and blew compressed air into it just in case it should be sealed inside, then fastened the pipe properly again.
I did a test-run in a local sea, and it seems to be okey. But I had difficulties starting up the Evinrude 18HP because movements of the steering handle grip was prevented from the “shifter lock” turning against the “link & stop”. So I wasn’t able to open the throttle sufficiently by using the handle grip. So I wander if that it’s correct behavior? Shouldn’t it be possible to give full throttle when engine is in neutral gear?
It seems that the “shifter lock” just barely pushes onto in the the “link and stop”. It’s almost an unmeasurable touch onto the stop mechanism. I could use a metal file slightly to make clearance so that the “shifter lock” (part no 203596) may advance to the next level on the “link and stop” (part no 380696) ? I don’t understand how it appeared. Is this a correct behavior? I would very much appreciate some comments on this matter.
