    Agree with labrador-guy.  I have used 6V starters with 12V battery a Lot.  If your 6V starters work, and you are not boating on the ocean, I would just do it.  There is also the possibility that a bracket from a similar but slightly newer motor would fit yours and be for a 12V starter.
