I’m rebuilding a Mercury KE 4. Remembering what a pain it was to replace the impeller in my Merc 20H, I was not looking forward to the chore of replacing the KE 4’s water pump cover. So I went on line and found this site. Still no easy answer. BUI…I remembered I had found a tool I believed would work in a garage sale. I found it and tried it. Worked like a charm—even though I don’t believe the impeller had ever been replaced.
It’s called a Spanner wrench, made by Wright Forged Tools. And they still make these. Mine is a 2” model (tool “9636). I called the company and they said these can be ordered through White Cap tool stores (Nat’l chain). The 2” is smallest, and adjustable. They have a 3” and a 4” , but size of tangs are larger. My 2” fit this motor perfectly. With a few taps with a peen, it loosened.
Here are photos of mine.
Hope this tool works for others, too.
