Many apologies for being so delayed in answering. My wife and I were travelling recently.
You asked whether on the starboard side of the motor the magneto is all the way forward to stop at a blocking spot when at full throttle.
It is not in such a position. At present the very end of the magneto’s stop plate does get blocked (barely), but peeking under the mechanism, I can see that the stop plate has a large indent on it that I believe is supposed to be where the blocking should happen. How to fix? I have a theory; tell me if the following seems logical.
Peeking under the magneto, I believe the magneto is bolted down onto another plate (I don’t know its name). That plate has lots of holes where the bolting could be made, including at least one slotted hole that I think, if used, would bring the big notch indent to about the right place to be blocked by the “boss.”
If that potential fix were done, I think the synchronization might better match what all the instructions say.
Unfortunately, to try that fix, the flywheel would have to be removed so that the magneto can be repositioned. So far I have been unable to remove it. I think I will have to try some heat to get the flywheel off. Others have said that it sometimes is necessary.
A supporting clue. Many years ago, after the boat sat unused while I was at college and in remote jobs, I set out to get it going again — probably around 1995. At that time, I removed the motor and took it to a marine shop for a complete check over. After that, when we got the boat back in the water, it did not run as fast as previously. I can’t help being suspicious that the marine shop people installed the magneto in the wrong holes.
Any thoughts?
Thank you for your knowledgeable help.
