I truly doubt that the 4stroke yamaha develops thrust equal to the old Evinrude.  But, am guessing that your wood boat has no problems planing off so I’m sure the Yamaha would work just fine on it.    I don’t know what condition your Evinrude is in, so won’t recommend either fixing or replacing it.    But, I’m guessing the new Yamaha is might pricey, especially once the steering and controls are updated.

I hesistate recommending spending big bucks on a new engine unless you have your boat inspected.   No sense putting a pricey new engine on a weak transom.
