    That melted rubber mess in your picture is that shift rod seal/rubber boot.  It has obviously failed and needs to be replaced, the engine won’t run without that seal being in place.  That seal is not holding the gearcase on though.  Once again, and I apologize for repeating myself, but the shift rod is disconnected from the gearcase, correct?

    I’m hoping the gearcase is off by now, and that the driveshaft came down with it….  Don
