    First, make sure it is slipping.  Make a mark on the plastic prop nut, and another mark in the prop, aligned with the first one.  Run motor till suspected slippage occurs, then stop and check your marks.  If no longer aligned, the hub spun.

    Agreed,  it is unlikely to be a clutch dog.  That would be a grinding or jumping sound.

    Could be cavitation, though.
