Good work!  This is a frustrating operation for sure.  Using a puller like the one pictured requires doing exactly what you did, using an alternate surface such as the vice to rest the puller on.  Like Bill says, resting that puller on the delicate aluminum seal housing will trash it for sure.  Glad you got it out relatively quickly.
