I belive that your ’53 has the universal style ignition, doesn’t it? That there will also make a difference on the crank too.
I had a neatral clutch model once many years back, and Frank is right. They are just like the TN Johnsons. I right now have a newly refurbished ’47 and it’s a 360 motor. That was a feature that was started way back in the early days of outboards 😉
