The gear was changed from a stamped brass gear to a cast bronze gear. They are interchangeable but BOTH gear/shafts assemblies must be replaced. The newer, cast gears are much better. The short gear/shaft length varies according to model/horsepower.
Another change was that the flat on the long gear/shaft was changed from a single flat on one side to a flat on both sides. You can replace the single flat with a double flat, but if you go the other way you might find the twist grip arrow may be on the bottom. I think I got that right.
