Welcome to the Dark Side. A lot of times that accumulated sand will expand and break out the side of the gear case. The original drain hole is about a sixteenth of an inch, which is ridiculously small. Virtually anything would plug it up. Your sand is only the tip of the Dark Side iceberg.
