If you or members of the club do not know them then I one thing I have tried that has worked well is to set up a paypal account (free) and have them seller post it on ebay with a Buy It Now price and a Best Offer option. Have the seller post the Buy It Now price really high and then you (the buyer) submit a Best Offer price at the amount you previously agreed upon. If he accepts you best offer and does not ship the product then you are covered under PayPal.
