You are right that Evinrude and Johnson are pretty much the same. On your model the main difference is the outer case and it’s mounting. Those 3’s are nice, smooth runners. When you get it started, check for the cooling system working – you should see just a small spray a few inches below the powerhead. Most of the cooling water exits under water. Most common problem is bad coils with shrunk and cracked insulation if the original coils are still in it. Those same coils were used up into the 1990s in the 2 HP.
