    Well guys,
I tried the purple stuff, oven cleaner and PB Blaster. The winner is….(insert drum roll here)

PB Blaster by a long shot.
The purple cleaner did little to nothing to cut through the thick nasty baked on carbon. Was a waste of time really.

The oven cleaner did a good job of burning the hair in my nose with the fumes and got some off but even after letting it soak for an hour did not get the bad stuff at all. One thing I did like about the oven cleaner was the way it ate through the paint. The merc mid section has some fine logos and lettering cast in to it. Sand blasting would ruin that detail, where as the oven cleaner left it all intact. I would only advise using it outside though. The fumes were bad.

The PB Blaster I sprayed on and let soak in. It started to dissolve the thick crud right away. I resprayed again after about an hour and let it soak in again. It ate through the thick stuff really well. After I rinsed it off I hit it with the purple stuff and It came out clean as could be. The PB fumes are pretty strong for indoor use as well, but in December in Wisconsin I did not have much for options.
