I tested the water pump this morning in a bucket of water, spinning the power head
over with a drill, and got “nothing”.
I felt certain that the wobbler was good enough to pump water, and seeing how
I had more back pressure than I thought normal, while blowing air up the discharge tube yesterday,
I pulled the power head off. The outlet in the power head was plugged, as was the mating
tell – tale spigot on the lower unit.
I rodded out the holes, but found it impossible to blow compressed air thru the water
jackets, so I made up a little wood fixture to bolt on the outlet, so I could blow air
through the water jackets. Got a little bit of grit out, but not too bad.
I was going to take the head off, but it didn’t want to let go, and I didn’t want to
ruin the head gasket, so I abandoned that idea.
My drill is a 1500 rpm unit. I’m sure this motor will pump enough water at speed,
but I’m wondering about at idle. The top of the power head is about 4″ above the
lower unit motor mount flange, but with the drill less that full speed, it’s only
pumping water a couple of inches high.
At idle will the wobbler pump force water up to the top of the power head, regardless?
Prepare to be boarded!
