Excellent ideas; hadn’t thought about slop in the distributor. But no, it seems to have no play at all.
Yep, big ol’ V-4, with battery / distributor ignition. All new ignition parts, including spark wires. I learned, (the hard way) to twist them while testing; they tested fine until I moved them around, and they then revealed themselves to be very tired and broken.
I also verified the points cam is right side up, and the cam did have a thin layer of lube.
