I was thinking it would be hard to get much purchase on the flywheel lip without risking catching the mag plate–they are so close!

What you are saying about stronger screws/bolts makes perfect sense, but I can’t figure out what size they are. They look like 1/4 x 20, except that 20 is the wrong number of threads per inch. Not as many as 28, though. It is close to a 12 x 24, but that seems a little too small. The engines are early 40s–so I doubt metric. This has me stumped, too. Thanks for replies!
