If your 1960 still has the original pump, it has a two-layered diaphragm, held together with a diaphragm support washer and rivet. The diaphragm support washer keeps the spring in place. Try a different scheme and the parts are likely to skoot out of place and destroy the diaphragm. But go ahead and try. I did.
