Louis, where did you learn this about the ID tags above? That is a really interesting and useful distinction. I took apart the gear case on my kd4 last night and compared the prop shaft/gear to the one from my k1/sea king. Completely different gears! Similar in size but bevels are very different.
I believe the upper of the 2 restored motors is a post-war kd3. The ID plate is on the starboard side and is then consistent with the distinction you point out.
