This is an important topic for the newer OMC 4-8hp models with full gearshift. Not only can the screen get plugged, but there is a big cavity for crap to get caught in under that horrible plastic cover…My $30 81 6hp’s impeller was busted up when I pulled it apart….I worried about impeller debris getting caught upstream….I blew out the water screen with compressed air, a few chunks came up through the water pump inlet hole in the plastic cover. Fortunately, I decided to pull that cover off, only to find a pile of impeller chunks in the large cooling inlet cavity under the plastic cover. I hate pulling these covers off, it is a total pain trying to clean the 847 sealer off the sealing surfaces, and trying to seal up the gasket surfaces during reassembly is near impossible. The plastic cover tends to deform and is no longer flat.
I’m glad I was able to overcome my laziness, such a simple issue would have driven me crazy with intermittent cooling issues for sure….
